I enjoyed reading Alice Hoffman's The Red Garden. Mrs. Hoffman gracefully connects 300 years of a town's history, from the town's founding woman who kept the first families alive to current times.
Though the chapters were sometimes 15 years apart in time, Mrs. Hoffman weaves together the town's history, it's legends, it's ghost stories in an easy to follow story line. She clearly defines the family trees of the founding families and the impact that individual townspeople and visitors had on the town throughout it's 300 year history. Her writing style is clean, which allows her to give us a thoughtful, touching story.
