The Snow Child is definitely novel I would recommend. Eowyne Ivey's novel length take on the Russian "the Snow Maiden" is set in Alaska, during the 1920's, and follows a middle aged couple trying to homestead in Alaska after struggling for several years after their infant son had died.

The story does move slow at times, but to me that was part of the story since life was "slower" in the 1900's than it is now. The Russian folktale, including the ending, was related within Ivey's story, which gave a spoiler for the ending. I think I would have liked it better if the folktale was told more in a parallel story line to the novel's story, so that the spoiler could have possibly been avoided. I, also, liked the minor characters, especially Esther, and would have like to read more of them.
