The first of Elizabeth George's Inspector Lynley series and her debut novel, A Great Deliverance, brings Inspector Lynley and Detective Sergeant Havers together on their first assignment together and makes for a good read. The two are sent to Yorkshire to investigate a murder while dealing with their own personal issues.

George gives depth to both main characters by presenting the case from both Lynley's and Havers' point of view. There are quite a few minor characters, and as the interviews of each by Havers and Lynley are completed a little more of the case and the personalities come out without giving away the ending.

This book was the basis for the pilot of the Inspector Lynley series on PBS, so if a reader is a fan of the series, he or she will find that, as is typical with books to TV or movies, the book is much better.
