E.S. Kraay has a beautiful handle on using language to tell a story well worth being told.
Tobit tells the story of a slave prior to, during, and after the Civil war, and the friendships that he made with a half-breed highwayman who called himself the Hoodoo Man.
Yes, this is considered "mystical" but not in an overwhelming way. The history of the US during the Civil War, the choice between freedom and what Tobit understood his family to be, and the aftermath of the Civil War for now free black men and women are all given life in this novel. Kraay gives each character 3 dimensions, thoughtful, well defined, and as a reader, I did not want to put the book down.
