The Biology of Luck

Jacob Appel takes on the "day in the life" theme and alternates between 2 characters-Larry, the NYC tour guide, and the girl he's in love with, Starshine. Each character goes through some tough moments throughout his or her busy day, dealing with some serious issues, and their paths cross without them even knowing it. The author shows what a small world it really is despite the story being set in a large city, New York City, by having the characters encounter and interact with minor characters without realizing they are traveling in a similar circle.

Appel paints a vivid picture of New York City, as well of the characters and their lives, from the simple humdrum boredom to serious traumas dealt with through out the day, and includes hope and humor through it all. Having never been to NYC, I enjoyed the details of the city and felt I was there.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.
