Brenna M's Book Blog

I grew up in Western New York, with a huge Italian, German, and Irish influence in my family life. Frederick Douglas, Susan B. Anthony, the Haudenosaunee, and the Erie Canal are a big part of the history in my area. This is, I believe, is one reason I like reading about history and historical fiction.

I garden, cook, and preserve some of the food I grow. I, also, enjoy traveling. A book or two are always with me when I travel. And there is always one in my car, at my desk, and anywhere I may have a chance to read. Primarily I read fiction--young adult, historical fiction, mysteries, thrillers. I do enjoy a good memoir, biographies, and cookbooks. If someone recommends something, I will always check it out.

BEDTIME FOR SWEET CREATURES

Nikki Grimes, author

Elizabeth Zunon, illustrator

Hardcover, 32 pages

Published January 14th, 2020 by Sourcebooks Jabberwocky

ISBN: 1492638323 (ISBN13: 9781492638322)

Such a treat! A beautifully illustrated hardcover book by Nikki Grimes and illustrated by Elizabeth Zunon. Zunon's illustrations use brilliant colors that lift right off the page. Her sweet creature's expressions are beautifully done. Grime's mommy is admirably calm and patient, and her sweet creature is full of spirit. The language used is alive, active and strong. The story and the illustrations perform well together, making Grimes and Zunon a talented team.

***Thanks to Nikki Grimes, Author, Elizabeth Zunon, illustrator, Sourcebooks Jabberwocky and Multicultural Children's Book Day for the opportunity to read and review this book. I won this through an MCBD giveaway.***

THE AMAZING LIFE OF AZALEAH LANE

The Amazing Life of Azaleah Lane - Nikki Shannon Smith

THE AMAZING LIFE OF AZALEAH LANE

Nikki Shannon Smith, author

Mari Lobo, illustrator

Picture Windows Books, a capstone imprint (January 1, 2020)

Age Range: 6 - 8 years

Grade Level: Kindergarten – 2

Lexile Measure: 0610

Series: Azaleah Lane (Book 1)

Hardcover: 112 pages

Language: English

ISBN-10: 1515844641

ISBN: 9781515844648 (hardcover)

ISBN: 9781515844686 (eBook PDF)

+++I was gifted this book by Capstone Publishers for my review for a Multicultural Children’s Book Day event.+++

Azaleah Lane is the middle child of 3 African-American girls. She goes to the zoo on a field trip at school and is given an extra credit assignment which she is excited about doing, but her younger sister lost her bear and needs Azaleah’s help. Her older sister is too busy practicing for a play at school, and mom and dad are working over the weekend. When will Azaleah get her extra credit done?

Azaleah’s story begins at school on a Friday, and ends Monday morning when she arrives at school. Author Nikki Shannon Smith kept Azaleah moving from excitement to worry when her parents ask her to be responsible for helping her sister. Azaleah is written as having some spunk, all while trying to be responsible and successful all while trying to be herself. The storyline moves quickly, so I can see a young reader staying interested throughout the book. Mari Lobo’s illustrations are colorful and bright. The expressions on the characters’ faces are wonderfully accurate for each part of the story.

Nikki Shannon Smith included a glossary of “new” words for the reader, instructions to make a diorama, and questions to answer verbally or written.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/31/20) is in its 7th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.

Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.

Wally was born in San Diego, traveled through Mexico, and Latin America. He was raised on the border at his family's ranch, whose original deed was recorded in 1870.
Hanging out between two countries, he met a lot of unusual people: Hollywood types, border patrol officers, professional trackers, smugglers, and people he won't mention by name. He'll remind you no matter how weird a story can get, it'll contain some grain of truth.

Here is a synopsis of his latest book, Twisted Love

Twisted Love explores the redemptive power of love even amidst the most brutal and privileged echelons of contemporary society. Julietta Aguilar, a young archaeologist with a dark past shrouded with sordid family secrets, discovers a hidden chamber under the ruins of the Templo Mayor, in the heart of Mexico City. She soon finds herself enmeshed in an ancient mystery even as she tries to solve her father's senseless murder.

Now followed by cartel killers, deadly supernatural spirits and thwarted by her own family, her quest for peace seems almost insurmountable – until she meets a man in black with a nefarious background who goes only by one name, Rocky.

A fast-paced, gripping read reminiscent of fifties pulp, the characters in Twisted Love offer a dark study in human nature.

DEBATING LEAVING????

I've gotten on to read people's posts, but I still am unable to post anything book related with the exception of the rating. Not so much fun not being able to blog about it. Another change-Facebook won't let me connect through them anymore due to booklikes not being a secure site so i changed my password.

I'm a little disappointed. I have not left yet, because i enjoy reading and catching up with everyone here. Just wish I could keep it book related.

THE MAYO CLINIC: FAITH, HOPE, SCIENCE

David Blistein and Ken Burns

Hardcover, 144 pages

Published September 18th 2018 by RosettaBooks

ISBN 9781948122290

Great book. I love the pics that are included. It's obviously not as in depth as the documentary, but it still has detail. A great story of a great American hospital and it's history. Even my 13 year old nephew enjoyed going through the book..

****I received this book from a goodreads giveaway in exhange for a fair review. *****

attempting something

I've not been able to actually post one of my reviews so i am trying this. I can update # of pages read or if i finished a book and rated the stars. but nothing else. We'll see how this goes.

Crazy Times, But I Am Still Reading.

I am in the middle of 3 books-one I am stalled on (The History of Bees), the other 2 are slowly getting read. I, also, have a giveaway book coming, as well as a "Secret Santa" book exchange book. Ugh, will I ever get through the ever growing TBR list?

Christmas baking, shopping, working, decorating, and more-talk about the Christmas Rush. Everything will get done. Eventually.

I will get the books read, reviewed, and posted. In the meantime, I hope those who celebrated Chanukah had a beautiful holiday, and Christmas, Boxing Day (or St. Stephen's Day), and New Years is wonderful for all.

OK, I am Back!

I was having some issues posting for a while. Facebook connections, UGH, kept saying Booklikes doesn't have a secure connection. So I changed the way i sign in. Of course, everything is telling me that Booklikes is not secure.

Has anyone had an issue with this? I hope not. I do have some more updating to do. Especially for the library challenge (i think on booklikes and goodreads?) and the Woman's bingo card.

Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday season.

THE LIBRARY ON The EDGE OF THE WORLD by Felicity Hayes McCoy

The Library at the Edge of the World - Felicity Hayes-McCoy

THE LIBRARY ON THE EDGE OF THE WORLD

 Felicity Hayes-McCoy

paperback, 368 pages

Published November 14th 2017 by Harper Perennial
ISBN:  0062663720 (ISBN13: 9780062663726)

Things start a quiet confusion while Hannah tries to figure out her life after divorce and moving back to her small, rural hometown. Then chaos when she starts renovations on her house and the community finds out they are losing governmental support for the library and seniors.
I am a library lover to begin with. Set that in Ireland, I am in heaven. This was a fun read. Some of the crotchety characters and the description of the landscape were great. Hayes-McCoy usually writes non-fiction about the Dingle Peninsula where this book is set, so she knows the area well. Her words bring out the beauty of the area wonderfully. Hannah's character was a little too stubborn for me, at first. But as I continued with the story, I soon realized why.

The Birchbark House - Louise Erdrich

THE BIRCHBARK HOUSE

Louise Erdrich

Hardcover, 224 pages

Published May 13th 2002 by Perfection Learning (first published 1999)
ISBN:  0756911869 (ISBN13: 9780756911867)

This is my first Louise Erdrich book. A middle grade chapter book that is well written. Erdrich includes a mini glossary at the end with Ojibawa pronunciation and meaning. I enjoyed having the Ojibawa language being used, rather than just English. The use of the language made the culture come through more when Erdrich describes landscape, ceremonies, and her characters became more complete. There is a section on small pox which may be a little bit harder for a middle grade reader, but Erdrich deals well with the main character's reaction and how the adults around her deal with the experience. I would definite recommend this, especially for parents who are trying to expand their kids' reading into diversity and different cultures.
